Why Not?

Why Not?

Our six-month Bahamas adventure has come to a bittersweet end.

We had a relatively uneventful crossing. There were quite a few storms to dodge on the bank and some unsettled seas entering the Gulf Stream, but we made it safely from Great Sale to Fort Pierce. As soon as we arrived, we were semi-joking about turning right around.

This was a trip we will look back on for the rest of our lives. Life changing is an understatement.

Last year, we only explored the Abacos. This year, we visited just about every place else:
➡️ Bimini
➡️ Andros
➡️ New Providence
➡️ The Exumas
➡️ Long Island
➡️ Cat Island
➡️ Eleuthera
➡️ The Abacos

We’ve been reminiscing for days, recalling all our favorite memories and superlatives, like the breathtaking water at Shroud, shooting a 6 pound lobster, wing foiling at Calabash and walking the cliffs at Morgan’s Bluff.

The Bahamas have our hearts and the islands feel like home.

For the last few months, we’ve been thinking a lot about what’s next. Do we come back to cruise the Bahamas for another season? Do we return to the states for a bit of land life? Do we want to live in the Bahamas? Do we keep the boat or try to sell it?

One thing is for sure: we are never going back to our old life.

I don’t think we’ll ever give up this freedom we created by letting go of the materials and things we’re supposed to chase. Time is so much more valuable than the money or the big house or the new car.

As it stands, we’re listing the boat for sale following our planned maintenance work with the goal of finding a new home in the Bahamas. There are a lot of unknowns and logistics to work out. If boat life taught us anything, it’s that all plans are subject to change. But, we met with a realtor and toured a few houses, giving us enough confidence to start making this plan a reality.

This is another big, daunting life shift but we’re excited. Life has a funny way of giving you what you need when you need it. When we started boat life, we always joked that we’d find ourselves a cute island to call home. Today, we’re saying why not make that dream a reality!

Another crossing in the books
A perfectly uneventful crossing. Dropped anchor for one last night and will pull into a slip tomorrow. It’s been nearly 9 months since the big boat has touched a dock, so it’s no surprise we’re feeling a bit feral. Time to clean things up and move off the boat before hauling out in about a week. It’s all feeling very real now. But first, a ridiculously long land shower and a massive Pub sub. Ready to go back. So many incredible memories! 🇧🇸
Full circle
Back to where it all began. It was really nice to be on the water again, even if only for a short day trip. Every time we come back to this spot, it feels surreal. Nothing here has changed but we sure have. We made good use of our time in Fort Pierce though, moving off the boat, hauling out and making sure our girl is ready for her next adventure.
That starting a new chapter feeling
Greeted by shark friends in the mooring field this morning. Picked up a bit of the Gulf Stream right out the St. Lucie inlet. Had to motor the whole way to Ft. Pierce but the ocean was as calm as it gets. Our last boat ride… for a while at least. One last open ocean selfie & all the feels today. 🥹
