They say if it scares you and excites you at the same time, you should probably do it.

Safe to say, we couldn’t get the beach house out of our minds. Remember how we said this idea was equally exciting and terrifying? That feeling certainly hasn’t changed, but we’re jumping in with both feet.

After reaching a general agreement on the purchase price, we made another trip to the Abacos to give the house an even more thorough inspection. While not required, it helped put our minds at ease before fully committing.

Home inspections, like we’re used to here in the states, aren’t part of the buying process in the islands. This is one of the many ways the process differs. While we could have hired an inspector, we felt confident that we could do an even more thorough inspection on our own.

With the purchase agreement, we got a better idea of what would come with the home, such as appliances, tools, vehicles and furniture. We also brought along a few home renovation experts (the Frick parents) to check all the major systems and belongings that would come with the home.

A few extra eyes never hurt and they also helped validate we’re not certifiably crazy for taking on this project.

We also took advantage of this second trip to do some shopping, checking availability and pricing out materials for the renovations. Luckily, Marsh Harbor has everything you could ask for when it comes to paint, lumber, appliances, cabinets and fixtures.

This home needs a lot of sweat equity. Some simple layout changes, removal of all the clutter and a ton of fresh paint will go a very long way. All signs point to this being a great opportunity to make this property our personal little beach compound.

So, we’re doing it!

Now we wait on the lawyers to do their due diligence before we can set a date to close. This process can take 1 month or 6 months. There’s no way to know for sure. Things just take longer on island time, and we’re here for it!

There’s also a small possibility the lawyers could uncover issues with the title search that would prevent this sale from ever moving forward. No doubt, waiting will be the hardest part.

It’s crazy how the world bends based on what you think. When you’re clear about what you want and move like it’s already yours, things suddenly shift. Doors open. It looks like luck, but it’s not.

We still have a lot to learn about our new home but feel so proud that we’re making this dream a reality. No doubt it will test us. Things will go wrong. But things will go wrong if you stay where you are or move forward. That’s just life.

Everything is a win if your goal is the experience.
